The Mindanao Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Longest Highway Mountain Tunnel Project is in full swing.
In a report to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain, who is in charge of the implementation of the DPWH's flagship infrastructure project, said that the 2.3-kilometer twin-tube, two-lane highway mountain tunnel is about to reach the halfway point of its boring activities, with a total cumulative length of about 1 kilometer in the southbound and northbound directions at both the north and south portal ends.
Senior Undersecretary Sadain said the tunnel is an important component of the 45.5-kilometer Davao City Bypass construction project, one of the flagship infrastructure projects initiated under the previous administration's "Build-Build-Build" program.
During the visit, Senior Undersecretary Sadain reviewed the progress of the project and commended the project team of the DPWH's Unified Project Management Office (UPMO)-Road Management Cluster 1 (Bilateral) and the contractors of the Shimizu Ulticon Bamboo for their hard work and contribution to the construction of the fast track.
This is the first project site visit by a PICE national leader to this flagship project of the Philippine government after more than three (3) years since the unprecedented challenges of the New Crown Pneumonia greatly affected everyone.
DPWH UPMO Road Management Cluster 1 (Bilateral) Project Director Benjamin A. Bautista said in a briefing that the tunnel construction is part of Contract Package I-1, the first of six (6) contract packages that will start in December 2020.
The tunnel will include facilities to ensure the safety of the public riding and will be closely monitored by the Operations and Control Center located in the Northgate area.
Contract Package I-1, which is targeted to be completed by December 2024, also includes four (4) 3.35-meter wide, 7.90-kilometer-long concrete paved roads, three (3) pairs of bridges with a total length of 500 linear meters, two (2) underpasses, two (3) overpasses, twelve (12) box culverts (waterways), and four (4).
The Davao City Bypass Highway construction project started in Bugi. Silavan, Toril, Davao City and will end in Burj. by J.P. Laurel in Panabo City.
It will improve Davao City's transportation logistics and ease traffic congestion from the current 1 hour and 45 minutes through the Maharlika Highway in only 49 minutes, thus contributing to the economic and healthy urban development of the city and the Davao region.
For the other packages, procurement activities for Packages I-2 and I-3 are currently underway. Package II-1 started in January 2023, procurement for Package II-2 is also underway, and Package II-3 is scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year.
